Republicans share hope, concerns with effort to fix Democrats’ police reform bills


Republican senators and representatives told reporters they are eager to work with the majority party to fix serious problems in the police reform legislation passed by Democrats last year. But with the Legislature’s policy cutoff approaching next week, House Republican Leader J.T. Wilcox and Rep. Jacquelin Maycumber, R-Republic, said they are concerned that not all of the restrictions preventing officers from protecting communities will be addressed. Senate Republican Leader John Braun introduced new Sen. Simon Sefzik, R-Ferndale, to the media, and Republicans answered questions from reporters on public safety, hospital staffing, K-12 curriculum, emergency powers and proposed expansion of voting rights and voter registration.
